How to Print a 2x2 Passport Photo

• 2 × 2 digital photo — a 600 × 600 pixel JPEG, cropped so the head is sized and positioned for a U.S. passport photo.
• 4 × 6 print sheet — two 2 × 2 photos on a standard 4 × 6 photo, with cut guides in the margins. Available as a JPEG image and a PDF.

A 4 × 6 print is one of the most common photo sizes, so you can print the sheet wherever you already print photos.

• Use matte or glossy photo-quality paper.
• The print must be sharp, not grainy, with no visible printer dots.
• Do not submit photocopies or scanned photos.
• Do not submit a damaged photo with holes, creases or smudges.
• Do not stretch or compress the photo to change its size.

• Choose 4 × 6 in (10 × 15 cm) as the paper size, and photo paper as the paper type.
• Set scaling to “Actual size” or 100%. Never “Fit to page” or “Fill”.
• Turn off borderless printing, which slightly enlarges the image to bleed off the edges.
• Turn off auto-enhance, red-eye fix and other automatic corrections.
• Use the highest quality print setting so no printer dots are visible.

The PDF version is laid out at exactly 4 × 6 inches, which makes “Actual size” easy to keep on a desktop printer.

You are ordering an ordinary 4 × 6 photo print, which is a different service from a store’s own passport photo service. Services and prices vary by store and location.

• Upload the 4 × 6 sheet image, not the single 2 × 2 file.
• Choose a 4 × 6 print size. The sheet is already exactly 4 × 6, so nothing needs to be cropped.
• If the kiosk offers “auto-fix”, “enhance” or cropping, turn it off.
• Choose glossy or matte finish — both are accepted.

If it measures less or more, a scaling setting was applied. Reprint at 100% rather than trimming a wrongly sized photo to fit.

Many printers and kiosks crop or zoom images by default to fill the paper. A sheet that is already exactly 4 × 6 does not need it, and any change moves the photos away from their 2 × 2 size.

The cut guides sit in the white margin, never on the photos. Cut both photos out and handle them by the edges to avoid fingerprints, creases or smudges.
